PRINCE2 (PRojects IN Controlled Environments) is a project management methodology that is standard throughout the United Kingdom. In recent years its influence has reached Australia as a recognised certification for government and IT projects, rapidly becoming popular across all industries as a minimum requirement for working on a project.
PRINCE2 helps practitioners navigate through all the essentials for running a successful project. It is flexible and aimed at all types of projects.
The PRINCE2 Foundation course is ideal for beginners. While candidates do not need to be a practising project manager to undertake the certification, it helps to have some experience as part of a project team to apply the principles of PRINCE2 to a work environment.
PRINCE2 is therefore suitable for project managers, team managers and members, project management office staff, project support staff, senior managers overseeing project teams and anyone interested in project work.
The PRINCE2 Practitioner course is ideal for practising project managers, or those working in a project team who seek a certification to lift their project management skills.
Students will learn how to execute a project from start-up to delivery, with techniques to control stages, manage costs and risk, monitor and review implementation, as well as build teamwork and human resources.
There are 7 processes:
- Starting up
- Directing a project
- Initiating a project
- Controlling a project
- Managing a stage boundary
- Managing product delivery
- Closing a project
Successful completion of the PRINCE2 certification will allow candidates to apply for a range of project roles including:
- Project officer
- Project administrator
- Project coordinator
- Project manager
- Project team leader
- Project director
It will also allow project managers to apply for roles and tenders where PRINCE2 is a pre-requisite, which is now becoming more common in government and corporations.
There are no formal pre-requisites for the Foundation certification, however students would benefit from some project experience. Students must achieve a pass in the Foundation exam to take the Practitioner course and exam.
Please note that in order to maintain currency of their certification, practitioners need to re-register their certification within 5 years, but no earlier than 3 years.
Course duration is dependent on study mode.
Online students will have the benefit of self-paced study with the average student able to complete the course within 25 hours for Foundation level and 85 hours for Foundation and Practitioner level. Most online programs will allow students up to 1 year to complete the course.
Students wishing to study via classroom delivery should speak to a CoursesNow consultant to discuss provider options. Most PRINCE2 programs run for a few consecutive days in intense mode, followed by a supervised exam sitting.
