Course overview

This course is for people who want to work in retail operations and/or supervision. You will learn how to maintain store safety and security and build relationships with customers.
You will also be able to choose from a range of electives including the areas of business management, sales and product knowledge. This will take place through a combination of individual and team based learning strategies that include practical activities, industry case studies, role plays, simulations, projects and assignments.


Course structure

The course structure below shows what you must do to complete this course. Units/modules are arranged in groups and sometimes also in subgroups.
You must complete each group as specified as well as following the course completion instructions. If a course contains optional groups there will be a
statement at the top of the course indicating how many you must do. At the top of any group containing optional subgroups there will be a statement
saying how many you must do.

 Career Opportunities

Sales assistant, customer service representative, crew leader, shift manager, team leader, department or assistant store manager, checkout supervisor and merchandise coordinator.

Entry Requirements

There are two alternative pathways for entry into the Certificate III in Retail. The candidate must either: Be recognised as competent, through a recognised training program or recognition process, against the following units of competency:
  • SIRXCCS001A Apply point-of-sale handling procedures
  • SIRXCCS002A Interact with customers
  • SIRXCLM001A Organise and maintain work areas
  • SIRXCOM001A Communicate in the workplace
  • SIRXICT001A Operate retail technology
  • SIRXIND001A Work effectively in a retail environment
  • SIRXINV001A Perform stock control procedures
  • SIRXOHS001A Apply safe working practices
  • SIRXRSK001A Minimise theft
  • Have sufficient relevant retail employment experience. A current or previous job role that involves or has involved the application of the above competencies, would be a satisfactory indicator for entry. A determination need not involve a formal process of measuring, evaluating or recording performance against the units of competency. Examples of evidence to support a determination could include:

  • job descriptions and references from current or past employers
  • an entry interview to determine what competencies have been applied in the retail environment in a paid or voluntary capacity.
