course overview
Students may tailor their study to suit particular areas of interest and experience, by electing from five areas of specialisation: Rural Nursing, Chronic Care Nursing Practice, Management, Nursing Education and Mental Health Nursing.
On completion of the first 64 points of study (including credit), students may exit the program with a Postgraduate Diploma in the area of specialisation.
Credit
Applicants with five or more years professional nursing experience may receive eight points credit (equivalent to one subject) in recognition of prior learning.
Applicants who have completed an approved Graduate Certificate awarded by The College of Nursing will be granted a credit package of 32 points (equivalent to four subjects). This will constitute the specialist strand allowing these applicants to enter the program at year two.
Canadian applicants who have completed a four-year Bachelor of Nursing Science (or equivalent) will be granted a credit package of 32 points (equivalent to four subjects). This will constitute the specialist strand allowing these applicants to enter the program at year two.
Exit points
Students may elect to exit the Master course after completion of the first two years with a Postgraduate Diploma in the area chosen for the specialised strand as follows:
Admission requirements
Minimum requirements for entry are an undergraduate degree in nursing or a related discipline. Applicants will also require at least one year professional experience in the health system after completing their undergraduate nursing qualification. Consideration for entry will be given to students who fall outside the above criteria but who have demonstrated success at the postgraduate level.
Academic expectations
For each 8 point subject at CSU, students should normally expect to spend between 140-160 hours engaged in the specified learning and assessment activities (such as attending lectures or residential schools, assigned readings, tutorial assistance, individual or group research/study, forum activity, workplace learning, assignments or examinations). The student workload for some subjects may vary from these norms as a result of approved course design.
Students will be assessed on the basis of completed assignments, examinations, workplace learning, or other methods as outlined in specific subject outlines.
Where applicable, students are responsible for travel and accommodation costs involved in workplace learning experiences, or attending residential schools (distance education students).
