English for Health

Do you want to improve your communication skills to work in health?  – 4 levels of increasing technical difficulty.

This course will develop the listening and speaking skills you need to communicate in a health-related workplace setting. There is an emphasis on vocabulary and this is developed through relevant texts. There are 4 levels with each level containing 6 units and 2 review units. Level 1 focusses on general communication; Level 2 – how to take a patient’s history; Level 3 details patient examination and diagnosis; Level 4 focusses on procedures and treatments.

In Level 4

Giving a presentation in English

Asking for or provide an opinion

Discussing an opinion to make a decision

Asking for more detailed information

Emphasising important points

Level 3

You will practise:

Reassuring the patient

Explaining the consequence of a treatment

Expressing a degree of possibility

Giving instructions

Using language and abbreviations associated with prescribing medicines

You will practise:

Level 2

Expressing certainty and ask for clarification

Asking questions to find out about a patient’s complaint

Asking a patient about pain and discuss the type and intensity of pain

Asking about family and social behaviours to respect culturally diverse patients

Asking for and give advice

Introducing yourself and another health professional

Using the telephone in a health care role

Asking for and give directions

Expressing likes and dislikes

Making generalisations

Asking for personal information to complete forms and confirm identity
