course overview

The course has been developed taking into account the occupational interests of psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, legal and criminal justice personnel including prison, probation and parole workers. Students complete a minor dissertation that is preferably relevant to their work setting.

Credit and articulation

Credit will only be given for directly comparable postgraduate subjects.

The Graduate Certificate in Criminology fully articulates with the Master of Social Science (Criminology).

The Graduate Certificate in Criminology provides a pathway to the Master of Social Science (Criminology) for students with insufficient criminology in their undergraduate degree.

Admission requirements

Applicants are required to have:

  • A relevant undergraduate degree (e.g. in justice studies, criminology, law, legal studies) from a recognised university, with a credit average or above in subjects in criminology and closely related fields, or
  • a criminology Honours degree, or
  • the Graduate Certificate in Criminology, with a Credit average, or above.

    Academic expectations

For each 8 point subject at CSU, students should normally expect to spend between 140-160 hours engaged in the specified learning and assessment activities (such as attending lectures or residential schools, assigned readings, tutorial assistance, individual or group research/study, forum activity, workplace learning, assignments or examinations). The student workload for some subjects may vary from these norms as a result of approved course design.

Students will be assessed on the basis of completed assignments, examinations, workplace learning, or other methods as outlined in specific subject outlines.

Where applicable, students are responsible for travel and accommodation costs involved in workplace learning experiences, or attending residential schools (distance education students).
