This course is specifically intended for correctional officers working in the area of correctional management. Entry is available to those applicants without a tertiary degree who have substantial correctional experience and whose employing body attests to their likely academic and vocational success; or people who would be suitable for the course.

The aims of the course are:

  • to provide an introduction to tertiary level study for experienced practitioners in the field of corrections
  • to enhance their understanding of their practice
  • to provide an entry level qualification for further postgraduate study in correctional management.
  • By the end of their studies in this course, practitioners will be able to:

  • produce academic work at the postgraduate level
  • demonstrate their understanding of theories of justice and the field of criminology.
  • Admission requirements

    This program is specifically intended for correctional officers working in the area of correctional management. Entry is available to those applicants without a tertiary degree who have a minimum of five years correctional experience and whose employing body attests to their likely academic and vocational success; or people who, in the opinion of the Course Coordinator, would be suitable for the program.

    For each 8 point subject at CSU, students should normally expect to spend between 140-160 hours engaged in the specified learning and assessment activities (such as attending lectures or residential schools, assigned readings, tutorial assistance, individual or group research/study, forum activity, workplace learning, assignments or examinations). The student workload for some subjects may vary from these norms as a result of approved course design.

    Students will be assessed on the basis of completed assignments, examinations, workplace learning, or other methods as outlined in specific subject outlines.

    Where applicable, students are responsible for travel and accommodation costs involved in workplace learning experiences, or attending residential schools (distance education students).
