Course overview

You'll learn everything you need to become a Group Exercise Instructor in the fitness industry with Australian Fitness Network’s Elite Group Exercise Instructor (eGX) course.

Studying with Australian Fitness Network will equip you with the skills and knowledge to be part of a dynamic and exciting industry, enabling you to instruct a variety of freestyle group exercise classes.

The course covers everything a freestyle group exercise instructor needs to know to start their career, there are 2 strands; you can chose the strand that best suits the types of Group Exercise classes you intend to instruct.

One is Freestyle Choreography: Which teaches you how to run a freestyle step, body sculpt and HiLo aerobic Classes. Otherwise there is Athletic Strand: which covers stretch classes, athletic muscle conditioning and circuit classes. The Elite Group Exercise course also includes: essentials of exercise science, the foundations of fitness instruction and conditioning, effective communication and essential instruction skills and so much more.

Australian Fitness Network specialises in online study, allowing you the freedom and flexibility to study in and around your lifestyle. With a team of online trainers who just an email or phone call away, you’ll be fully supported by fitness industry professionals as you work through your course.

Course structure

The Certificate III in Fitness, specialising in Group Exercise Instruction, is comprised of 24 competencies clustered into 12 modules.

The course is self-paced, allowing you the freedom and flexibility to complete your study in and around your lifestyle, however each certificate is to be completed within a 6 month timeframe.

You will be assessed in a number of different ways:

  1. Online knowledge checks- these online quizzes are graded automatically providing you with instant results
  2. Short answer questions/programs- assessed personally by your online trainers, these tasks give you the opportunity to start preparing for your career in the industry and are accompanied by detailed feedback from industry professionals
  3. Practical tasks- these tasks allow you to put your theory into action and demonstrate your newly developed skills in real-life environments.

Choose the option that corresponds with the strand you have completed- either Athletic or Choreographed, but NOT BOTH.

Option 1

Choreographed

In Option 1: Choreographed, you are required to design and instruct three class types: Aerobics, Step and Bodysculpt

THE CHOREOGRAPHED OPTION IS LISTED IN THE ASSESSMENT SECTION OF THE CHOREOGRAPHED STRAND.

Option 2

Athletic

In Option 2: Athletic, you are required to design and instruct three class types: Athletic Muscle Conditioning (AMC), Circuit (or indoor boot camp) and stretch.

This Practical Assessment is to be submitted via video or DVD/ Please note that you will need to find a suitable venue and participants for your assessment as Australian Fitness Network cannot provide this for you. Your video or DVD should be no longer than 60 minutes in length.

Career Opportunities

Once you have registered your group exercise instructor you have the opportunity to instruct a range of freestyle classes within a gym; anything from circuit classes to body sculpt and muscle conditioning, step and aerobics. This is also the first step towards getting your qualifications in specialized group exercise classes like boxing or pilates classes.

Entry and Course Requirements

There are no entry requirements for this qualification.

However, it is strongly recommended that students are currently regularly attending a fitness facility and participating in a variety of group exercise classes and are familiar with the roles that exist within the fitness industry.

Students must:

  • Have regular access to a computer with broadband internet connection
  • Provide evidence of an up-to-date CPR and Senior First Aid qualification (HLTFA301B)
  • Have regular access to a fully equipped fitness facility
  • Be able to secure the support of a qualified fitness mentor
  • Be able to secure the equipment (including music and microphone) and venue (group exercise room) required for video documentation of practical tasks.
