Day 1: Meeting the Expectations of Multiple Stakeholders

Stepping up into a middle management role adds multiple levels of complexity and requires the juggling of multiple roles and responsibilities. The program starts with a stakeholder mapping exercise and role analysis. You will then have an opportunity to develop a detailed stakeholder management plan with strategies to deal with demanding and sometimes conflicting expectations. Your ability to juggle multiple leadership and management roles will be assessed via the results of a 360° Feedback Survey.

Day 2: Extending Your Leadership Flexibility and Negotiation Capabilities

The ability to effectively influence upwards, sideways, outwards and downwards is a vital requirement for a middle manager who often need to interact with stakeholders who are in more powerful positions. This is where the ability to negotiate win/win outcomes becomes an everyday necessity.

Day 3: Enhancing Your Personal Power and Impact

Day three offers an opportunity to identify the sources of your personal power and enables you to project yourself with greater clarity and conviction. You will also strengthen your ability to actively listen under pressure and present compelling arguments and inspiring messages.

Day 4: Practically Managing Performance to Meet High and Often Changing Expectations

Your ability to bring out the best in yourself, your key reports and their teams is a critical success factor for you as a middle manager. Practice coaching skills for performance and giving and receiving performance feedback from your fellow participants whom you have been working with during the program.

Day 5: Leading and Managing Change Programs and Initiatives Across Multiple Groups and Teams

Middle managers play a vital role in implementing organisational change. Without your active translation of strategy into action, change will not just happen or be sustained. Develop extra strength and resilience to be able to withstand the roller coaster of being in the ‘eye’ of organisational change. Finally, develop implementation plans for your transition back into the organisation.

    Individual Coaching

The program provides the opportunity for one-to-one coaching, to assist embed learning and explore individual challenges. The 360° Feedback Survey will provide insights into strengths and possible blind spots that, together with the program experience, form a basis for discussion and development of action plans.

    Learning Approach

This program provides middle managers with a safe environment in which they can learn from experts and peers, in a non-threatening way. Learning methods include:

  • Individual feedback and coaching sessions — Theatre-based role plays — Analysis of survey feedback — Small group experiential exercises

  • Theatre-Based Learning

  • Content sessions blended with group work — Individual reflection — Development planning — Class discussion

  • The signature feature of this program is the stimulating and challenging theatre-based learning activities that Peter Fisher, our professional actor, will lead you through during the program. These fun, active and creative exercises will help you to capitalise on your ability to influence when “in the spotlight” of your role, whether one-on-one or when presenting to large groups.

    Program Agenda

    360o Feedback Survey

This survey will focus on the most relevant competencies required for middle management positions. The results and implications from this assessment will be fully facilitated during the workshop.

    Pre-Program Preparation

This program is supported by the AGSM Executive Education e-learning platform. On confirmation of enrolment, you will be required to undertake the 360o feedback survey that captures feedback from peers, supervisors and subordinates.

The program focuses on better understanding the difference between leading, managing, and operating. To assist with this task you will be asked to complete and bring with you a one-week log of your activities in your current role. During the program, activities will be structured around discussion of the log and what it shows about you as a middle manager. You will also be required to complete relevant pre-reading prior to your attendance.

    Post Program Follow-up

The program fee also includes a phone mentoring session after the program to help you implement your action plan and embed practice.
