The Road Ranger Skills Upgrade is a practical training course designed to provide heavy vehicle drivers with the skills to competently drive heavy vehicles equipped with a constant mesh gearbox. (These are also known as "Road Ranger" gearboxes or "crash boxes").

Participants in the course must hold a current heavy vehicle driver's licence: HR, HC or MC.
This course is designed for heavy rigid, semi-trailer, truck and dog or B-double drivers who either do not have experience driving a vehicle equipped with a constant mesh gearbox, or whose skills in driving such a vehicle need improving.
A Training Statement of Attainment and Driver Evaluation report shall be issued at completion of the course to those participants who demonstrate competence to the national standards.
Training conducted on this course aligns to the following units of competence from the Training Package: Transport and Distribution TDT02 (Road Transport)
*The unit of competence the participant will be assessed against depends on the class of vehicle used for the training and assessment.
