Course Overview

General Insurance provides an understanding of the knowledge and skills an adviser or support staff requires to provide general product advice in relation to motor vehicle, consumer credit, health, travel, home and contents insurance.

This course can also be completed Distance Education: GenIns-O - General Insurance.

This is a stand alone course that is listed on the ASIC training register and provides partial recognition towards a nationally recognised qualification - the Diploma of Financial Services (Financial Planning) (DFS-C - Classroom or DFS-O - Distance Learning).

Prerequisites

Please note that this course can only be undertaken once you have successfully completed either of the following two courses:

  • General Advice (GenAdv-C - Classroom / GenAdv-O - Distance Learning); or
  • Financial Advice (DFS1-C - Classroom / DFS1-O - Distance Learning).

Unit 1: Understanding Insurance

  • What is insurance (Risk management, insurance products, insurance market, insurance product development and pooling risk)
  • History of insurance (in the beginning, European merchants, great fire of London, Lloyd's of London and reinsurance)
  • Pricing risk (insurance underwriting, insurance premium
  • Under-insurance (new-for-old and market value)
  • Insurance company laws

Unit 2: General Insurance

  • General insurance & enquiries complaints scheme
  • Insurance Ombudsmen and Insurance Contracts Act 1984
  • General Insurance Code of Practice
  • Types of general insurance products (motor vehicle, consumer credit, health, travel, home and contents insurance)
  • Taxes & levies (stamp duty, emergency services levy & GST)

Assessment

Assessment will be by way of a series of short answer questions, practical activities, tasks, role plays and simulated workplace application.
