Course Overview

This course provides an understanding of the knowledge and skills an adviser or support staff requires to provide advice in relation to foreign exchange.

This is a stand alone course that is listed on the ASIC Training Register and provides partial recognition towards a nationally recognised qualification - the Diploma of Financial Services (Financial Planning) (DFS-C - Classroom or DFS-O - Distance Learning).

Prerequisites

Please note that this course can only be undertaken once you have successfully completed either of the following two courses:

  • GenAdv-C (Classroom) / GenAdv-O (Distance Learning) - General Advice; or
  • DFS1-C (Classroom) / DFS1-O (Distance Learning) - Financial Advice

Units (General Advice) Content

Unit 1: Industry Requirements

  • The financial services industry (The Finance and insurance sector, distinct markets, primary and secondary markets, efficient market, market indices and global markets)
  • Education, Integrity and ethical requirements
  • Industry Standards & Codes of Practice (ASIC's Role, breach of an Industry Code, Financial Planning Association)

The Economic Environment (business cycle, economic policy, Australian economic conditions and global economic factors)

Unit 2: Regulatory Requirements

  • Regulatory Framework (Financial Services Reform Act, Corporations Act, ASIC Act 2001, Trade Practices Act, Life Act and Insurance Act, Privacy Amendment Act, Consumer Credit Code, Contracts Law, Trust Law, Consumer Affairs Acts)

Penalties for non-compliance (adverse outcomes for customers, criminal prosecution, regulatory intervention and civil claims)

  • Role of the adviser

Unit 3: Foreign Exchange

  • Operations of foreign and Australian forex markets
  • Fx vocabulary (spot, lots, quote, buy-back)
  • Exchange rate guarantee (benefits and erg related risks)
  • Major currencies (cross rates, settlement)
  • Forward exchange contracts
  • Forex taxation requirements

Developing strategic forex options and related risk

Unit 5: Seven Steps of Investment Advice

  • Step 1 - Establish a relationship with the client
  • Step 2 - Determine client's needs and objectives
  • Step 3 - Develop appropriate strategies and solutions
  • Step 4 - Present appropriate strategies to clients
  • Step 5 - Negotiate the financial plan with the client
  • Step 6 - Implement agreed plan
  • Step 7 - Provide ongoing service

Assessment

Assessment will be by way of a series of short answer questions, practical activities, tasks, role plays and simulated workplace application.
