Course overview
The Diploma of Accounting is for those seeking professional accounting job roles such as assistant accountant, office manager and other roles within the accounting and bookeeping industries.
Students will acquire skills in introducing and maintaining accounting systems, reporting on business performance, preparing tax returns, preparing financial statements, maintaining internal control systems and preparing management accounting reports. This will include establishing and operating a computerised accounting system, managing budgets and forecasts and establishing business networks.
Career pathways
Graduates will be eligible to apply for professional accounting job roles in financial services and other industries. Indicative job titles include:
- Assistant accountant
- Accounts officer
- Office manager
- Administration manager
- Budget officer
The Diploma of Accounting exceeds the minimum educational requirements to become a registered BAS and/or tax agent. See the Tax Practitioners Board website for further details about registration.
Entry requirements
Entry requirements differ according to course provider. As a minimum, prospective students are expected to have completed the Certificate IV in Accounting, Certificate IV in Bookkeeping or equivalent units.
In some cases, although there may be no formal entry requirements, exposure to accounting in a work context is highly recommended.
Course duration
Course duration is dependent on study mode.
Online and distance study students will have the benefit of self-paced study with the average student able to complete the course within 48 weeks studying about 4 hours per week. Most online programs will allow students up to 2 years to complete the course.
Students wishing to study via classroom delivery should speak to a CoursesNow consultant to discuss provider options. Most Diploma programs run for a few hours a week for 52 weeks during the chosen institution's term time.
