If you love caring for children but don't necessarily want to work in an early childhood care role, the Certificate IV in Children's Services could be the course for you.
Designed for people who need a qualification to work with children in vacation programs and out of school hours services, the Certificate IV in Children's Services (Outside School Hours Care) will equip students with the skills and knowledge they need to provide this valuable service.
The Certificate IV in Children's Services (Outside School Hours Care) is recommended for carers who would like to work with school-aged children in before/after school care and/or vacation programs.
The course covers how to plan activities and provide care for children of school age, facilitating their leisure and play and enabling them to achieve their developmental outcomes.
Students will also need to undergo 120 hours of supervised work placement to give them the practical skills required to care for children in this role.
Upon successful completion of the Certificate IV in Children’s Services (Outside School Hours Care), graduates can apply for roles such as:
- Recreation assistant
- Out of school hours care assistant
- Group leader
- Play leader
- Mobile assistant
- Vacation care supervisor
Finishing this course will also allow graduates to apply for advanced standing in CHC51008 Diploma of Children's Services (Outside School Hours Care) as the core units in this qualification form the entry requirements.
Entry requirements differ according to course provider. As a minimum, prospective students are expected to have:
- Completed an Australian Year 10 or equivalent qualification.
- Average literacy levels.
- Above average English language skills.
In some cases, although there may be no formal entry requirements, experience in a childcare role is highly recommended.
Prior to completing the course, students must also have a current certificate in first aid (HLTFA311A), which is not included in the course units.
Course duration is dependent on study mode.
Distance study students will have the benefit of self-paced study with the average student able to complete the course within 52 weeks.
