Course overview

Certificate I in Horse Industry Operations (Performance Horse) is designed for people entering the horse industry with little or no experience. It is suitable for pre-industry and VET in Schools training where graduates work under close supervision and require basic horse handling and safety skills to work with docile horses in and around stables.

The course enables beginner horse grooms working under direct supervision to develop skills, underpinning knowledge and behavioural attributes required for the care and maintenance of performance horses. It also provides them with knowledge of the horse industry and its many sectors.

By completing the course, students will be able to carry out a range of duties under supervision including handling, feeding, grooming and caring for performance horses as well as applying workplace safety practices.

Course structure

The course structure below shows what you must do to complete this course. Units/modules are arranged in groups and sometimes also in subgroups.

You must complete each group as specified as well as following the course completion instructions. If a course contains optional groups there will be a statement at the top of the course indicating how many you must do.

Course contents

A total of 6 units must be completed - 5 core units and at least 1 elective unit

Blended Online & Workshop Study Option

Practical training workshops are not compulsory if student has access to facilities and expertise in their local area.

Prepare to work in the performance horse industry


Introduction to Occupational Health & Safety Procedures


Catch, groom and handle horses safely under supervision


Provide daily care for horses


Provide feed for livestock


At least 1 module/units must be completed




Demonstrate basic horse riding skills


Assist with natural mating procedures and parturition of horses


Operate ride-on vehicles
