Course overview
This course is only available to traineeship participants, in the work place and through School Based New Apprenticeships (SBNA's) at participating secondary schools.
Training may be conducted on site at the participating school or workplace and/or on campus at Broadmeadows, both in the classroom and in our specially developed outdoor training area, by our dynamic teaching department. We offer students an individual and flexible approach to learning in a caring and supportive environment.
Certificate II is regarded as an entry level course.
Graduates will have skills and knowledge to become a valued and productive employee within the Horticulture Industry.

What employment opportunities will I have?
On successful completion of this course you will be able to seek employment in any of the various sectors of the turf industry. Employment opportunities include working for small scale domestic contractors, large scale commercial contractors, government and semi-government bodies, sporting clubs or even self employment. Graduates frequently progress to an apprenticeship (Certificate III in Horticulture - Turf).
What skills will I have when I complete this course?
You will gain the skills to install and renovate turf as well as recognise the different types of and care for turf. You will also gain knowledge of OH&S issues, communications skills, environmental work practices and industry awareness.
What qualifications will I receive?
On successful completion of the course you will be awarded the Certificate II in Horticulture (Turf). As part of the Australian Qualifications Framework this program is nationally recognised.
What opportunities for further studies will I have?
Graduates frequently find employment in the industry as an apprentice and return to us to complete the trade level Certificate III in Horticulture (Turf).
Kangan Institute offers students who graduate from this course a pathway through a range of Certificate Level Courses and on to a Diploma in Ornamental Horticulture.
Can I apply?
As this an introductory level course, anyone with an interest in the turf sector of the industry can apply. This includes young people, mature age persons, people with a previous employment history and those already employed in the industry.
How do I apply?
You must become a trainee through your secondary school or by obtaining work within the industry in a Turf Traineeship.

How will I be selected for this course?
You will be referred to us by the training coordinator through your school or workplace.
How long is the course?
Up to 18 months, but there is scope to complete the course sooner.

How will I be assessed?
A mixture of practical assessment tasks, observation as well as oral and written questioning will be used in assessing this course. Assessment is a necessary part of this program, to demonstrate that you have achieved the skills and knowledge set out in the competency standards.
You will be advised in advance about the assessment procedure and criteria. There will also be opportunity for appeal and reassessment and you will be provided with this information.

The Horticulture Department is a small yet dynamic department offering students an individual and flexible approach to learning in a caring and supportive environment.
Kangan Institute Horticulture students have been awarded the Don Fleming Student Design Award held at the Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show in 2002 and 2005.
In 2002 a Horticulture student was awarded the State and National Vocational Student of the Year.
