Course overview

The full and part time course is conducted on campus at Broadmeadows, both in the classroom and in our specially developed outdoor training area, by our dynamic teaching department. We offer students an individual and flexible approach to learning in a caring and supportive environment. 

This course is also available to traineeship participants, in the work place and through School Based New Apprenticeships (SBNA's) at participating secondary schools. 

Certificate II is regarded as an entry level course. Graduates will have skills and knowledge to become a valued and productive employee within the landscape industry.

What employment opportunities will I have?

On successful completion of this course you will be able to seek employment in any of the various sectors of the landscape industry. Graduates frequently progress to an apprenticeship (Certificate III in Horticulture- Landscape).

Kangan Institute offers students who graduate from this course a pathway through a range of Certificate level courses and on to a Diploma in Ornamental Horticulture.

What skills will I have when I complete this course?

You will gain the skills to lay paving, construct retaining walls, install irrigations systems, operate equipment, establish turf, recognise and care for plants. You will also gain knowledge of OH&S issues, communication skills, environmental work practices and an overall industry awareness.

What qualifications will I receive?

On successful completion of the course you will be awarded the Certificate II in Horticulture (Landscape). As part of the Australian Qualifications Framework this program is nationally recognised.

What opportunities for further studies will I have?

Graduates frequently find employment in the industry as an apprentice and are then eligible to enrol into the Certificate III in Horticulture (Landscape). Other options include Certificate IV or higher level courses for those seeking supervision and management skills.

Can I apply?

As this is an introductory level course anyone with an interest in Horticultural landscaping can apply. This includes young people, mature age persons, people with a previous employment history and those already employed in the industry.
Enrolments for Semester I have now closed. Applications are open for the next intake which will be in July 2010.

How do I apply?

You may apply direct to the Institute. Applicants must complete the Kangan Institute application form. Enquiries to the Horticulture Department can be made on (03) 9279 2313. This course also has a mid year intake.

How will I be selected for this course?

Applicants will be asked to attend an informal interview and information session prior to enrolment.

How long is the course?

Full-time students are required to attend for 24 hours per week for 20 weeks. Part time students may enrol in as many units as they can attend from 3 - 21 hours per week.

Where and how can I study?

This course is offered at the Broadmeadows campus.

What costs and other fees should I expect?

Direct your enquiries to 13 TAFE (13 8233) for a fee schedule. Students will be required to purchase their own safety gear. Students are required to have suitable clothing and footwear for outdoor work, as well as ear muffs, safety glasses and gloves.

How will I be assessed?

You will be assessed to show that you have achieved the skills and knowledge required by the course. Assessment may include written, oral or practical assessment methods. You will be advised in advance regarding the type of assessment and the how it will operate. There is the opportunity for reassessment and appeal and you will be provided this information.

The Horticulture Department is a small yet dynamic department offering students an individual and flexible approach to learning in a caring and supportive environment.

Kangan Institute Horticulture students have been awarded the Don Fleming Student Design Award held at the Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show in 2002 and 2005. 

In 2002 a Kangan Institute Horticulture student was awarded the State and National Vocational Student of the Year.
