Course summary

This course is for participants who have not previously achieved a Year 10 qualification. This qualification develops general education, employability and industry specific knowledge and skills at a Year 10 equivalent standard.

It aims to develop literacy, numeracy, introductory science skills, computing, vocational & sociology skills to a recognised level of education.

At Toowoomba we offer English (5 modules), Maths (5 modules), Science (5 modules), Computing (4 modules), Shaping Australia (1 module).

Students also study an introductory module called Study Skills and Orientation and a module called Exploring Options that helps them look toward future study directions and careers.

There are extra electives in English, Maths and Science for those students who want to pursue these areas in greater depth.

In 2010 for the first time we have offered some modules externally. We have offered English, Maths and Computing only in this mode. Students would not be able to complete the whole certificate externally, but it would be enough for some branches of the Defence Forces.

Application Procedures

Students apply directly to Charmaine Davis.

A skills Review is usually required. An appointment must be made. The interview and the Skills Review takes over an hour.

Materials & Equipment

Science students need shoes that cover their feet such as boots or sneakers. Sandals and thongs cannot be worn in the science laboratory.

No textbooks are required as any that are needed have been incorporated into the course fees.

Entry requirements

There are no formal entry requirements for this course. Literacy and numeracy skills will be assessed prior to entry.

Open entry. You will undertake a skills assessment in literacy and numeracy to determine your skills readiness to enter the English and Mathematics core subjects; preparatory programs are available for skill development if needed.

Students need a Year 8 competency level or higher and at some campuses skills reviews are done before entry.

If students do not have this level they may need to study vocational literacy and numeracy and we can arrange this for them.
